A new study done by researchers on mice with diabetes shows fructose absorbs quickly into the liver and converted into fat. Researchers found that fructose absorption is more in mice with diabetes than mice without diabetes. This process causes serious health complications. Prof Richard Lee says consuming too much of sugar such as fructose can stimulate diabetes. Researchers are blaming a protein that was activated due to diabetes for the quick absorption of fructose and subsequent fat creation. Low amounts of fructose consumption that comes with fruit are considered safe. Author of the study is Prof Richard Lee, Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the study results were published in journal eLife.

A study done by Dr. G Seghieri shows extra benefits for patients who undergo treatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins. The risk to the incidence of infection (such as pneumonia infections and all bacterial infections) is five times more in diabetes patients. Infection rises risk to coronary artery disease and hospitalization. So health care professionals prescribe statins as secondary prevention from infection. Current guidelines indicate that diabetes patients over the age of 40 years should take statin treatment. This study in the abstract form presented at the EASD conference.
