A Test Strip Can Help In Monitoring The Health Of A Patient With Heart Failure
The researchers from China have invented a paper-based test strip to monitor the progression of heart failure in a patient.
A patient with heart failure requires close monitoring of heart health to avoid emergency cardiac department visits. The risk of heart failure can be monitored with the brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) antigen and suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) antigen in the blood as they are linked to heart failure. Measuring these biomarkers is useful in monitoring the progression (advancement) of heart failure. But this procedure will require skilled staff and equipment.
The new test strip requires just 10 platelets per microliter (mcL) of blood from the patient of heart failure. The color of the test strip will turn into a green dot with the presence of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) antigen and into a blue dot with the presence of the suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) antigen. The intensity of the blue or green color will increase with the levels of BNP or ST2 antigen.
The intensity of color in the test strip is directly proportional to the worsening of heart failure in a patient. Both the patient and the physician can use the test strip to analyze and monitor the heart failure in a patient. The blood sample can be analyzed and transmitted to the physician via a mobile App. The physician can provide necessary treatment to a patient of heart failure based on the test strip.
The inventors have tested the product on the blood sample of 38 patients of heart failure. The trial has found that even minimal levels of ST2 and BNP are successfully detected with the test strip. The inventors have compared this technique (or procedure) with the Household Fluorescent Lateral Flow Strip Platform (UC-LFS platform) technique, which was approved by the US FDA. They found that they are in a good linear correlation.

Less Than Six Hours Of Sleep A Night Could Kill Those Patients At Risk Of Heart Disease
An observational study at the Penn State College of Medicine, Pennsylvania, the United States shows a double risk of death from stroke or heart disease with less than six hours of night sleep among those people with the risk factors to diabetes (or poor glucose metabolism), heart disease and hypertension (high blood pressure.
