A Test Strip Can Help In Monitoring The Health Of A Patient With Heart Failure

The researchers from China have invented a paper-based test strip to monitor the progression of heart failure in a patient.

A test strip can help in monitoring the health of a patient with heart failure.

A patient with heart failure requires close monitoring of heart health to avoid emergency cardiac department visits. The risk of heart failure can be monitored with the brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) antigen and suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) antigen in the blood as they are linked to heart failure. Measuring these biomarkers is useful in monitoring the progression (advancement) of heart failure. But this procedure will require skilled staff and equipment.

The new test strip requires just 10 platelets per microliter (mcL) of blood from the patient of heart failure. The color of the test strip will turn into a green dot with the presence of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) antigen and into a blue dot with the presence of the suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) antigen. The intensity of the blue or green color will increase with the levels of BNP or ST2 antigen.

The intensity of color in the test strip is directly proportional to the worsening of heart failure in a patient. Both the patient and the physician can use the test strip to analyze and monitor the heart failure in a patient. The blood sample can be analyzed and transmitted to the physician via a mobile App. The physician can provide necessary treatment to a patient of heart failure based on the test strip.

The inventors have tested the product on the blood sample of 38 patients of heart failure. The trial has found that even minimal levels of ST2 and BNP are successfully detected with the test strip. The inventors have compared this technique (or procedure) with the Household Fluorescent Lateral Flow Strip Platform (UC-LFS platform) technique, which was approved by the US FDA. They found that they are in a good linear correlation.

The authors of the study are Feng Xu and Min Lin and the study was published on 24 May 2017 in the ACS Nano. Title of the article is "Paper test strip could help heart failure patients monitor their condition at home."

An observational study at the Penn State College of Medicine, Pennsylvania, the United States shows a double risk of death from stroke or heart disease with less than six hours of night sleep among those people with the risk factors to diabetes (or poor glucose metabolism), heart disease and hypertension (high blood pressure. BP).

Less than six hours of sleep a night could kill those patients at risk of heart disease.

The researchers have monitored 1,344 individuals, men and women, with a mean age of 49 years, in the sleep laboratory and came to the above conclusion.

Professor Jeremy Pearson, an associate director at the British Heart Foundation says those individuals struggling to get proper sleep (or sleep for more than six hours) during the night should speak to their GP to find ways to get proper sleep during night time.

The study shows that 39 percent of the study participants are with at least three metabolic syndrome risk factors (a danger sign) such as.

The study has found a modest risk of death among those people who sleep more than six hours.

The authors of the study say that a clinical trial should be done to find out whether the heart health and risk factors will improve with the increase in sleep duration.

This study was funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the American Heart Association (AHA).

The lead author of the study was Dr. Julio Fernandez-Mendoza, an assistant professor, the Penn State College of Medicine, Pennsylvania, the United States and also a sleep psychologist at the Sleep Research & Treatment Center, the Penn State Health Milton S Hershey Medical Center. The study was published on May 17, 2017, in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Title of the article is "Impact of the Metabolic Syndrome on Mortality is Modified by Objective Short Sleep Duration."
