Earlier studies show an independent association between changes in the brain and obesity/type 2 diabetes (T2D). But a collaborative research between the Ewha Brain Institute, The Ewha Womans University, South Korea and The Brain Institute, the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, the United States shows combined effects of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) on the brain. This study shows an independent association between adverse effects on brain/other body organs and obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D).

The brain may be affected and the risk of dementia increases with metabolic dysfunctions associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Obesity or overweight worsens the metabolic abnormalities associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Researchers say metabolic dysfunction associated with obesity (with or without type 2 diabetes T2D) are responsible for cognitive impairment and brain alterations. The researchers conducted studies among individuals who were diagnosed within the last five years and are in the early stages of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The participants are not under insulin treatment.

A total of 150 individuals, both male and female, aged between 30 and 60 years, participated in the study. The researchers divided the participants into three groups, one group of individuals who are obese or overweight with type 2 diabetes (T2D), the second group of individuals who are normal weight with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the third group of individuals are with normal weight without type 2 diabetes (T2D). Researchers evaluate the thickness of cerebral cortex by using MRI scan. The above study findings show weight contributes to decreasing functionality of brain and cognitive function in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The current study could not able to find out specific health factors affecting brain alterations in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). But those patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who could reduce overweight or obesity and manage insulin resistance during early stages of diabetes may reduce brain alterations and cognitive function. Overweight or obese individuals without type 2 diabetes (T2D) were not included in the study. The researchers could not able to determine the effects of obesity or overweight on non-diabetic individual's cognitive and brain functions. Authors of the study are Han Byul Cho, PhD, Dr. Sunjung Yoon and Dr. In Kyoon Lyoo. The study finding was published in the journal Diabetologia.
